May Warner

Veterinary Intern

Dr May is our first Veterinary Intern at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital. May graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2022, where she completed her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. During her studies, May gained exposure to wildlife work as a volunteer with Wildlife Victoria, working with local carers and rehabilitation groups and undertaking placements at wildlife hospitals around Australia including BBWH.

Since graduating, May has worked in small animal practice, honing her medical and surgical skills including keyhole surgery and advanced imaging such as CT. During this time, she spent her days off as a skilled volunteer within the veterinary team at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre at Healesville Sanctuary, gaining further skills in the treatment of wildlife, clinical pathology and the medical management of threatened species populations. She has also worked with the One Health research group at the University of Melbourne, assisting as a veterinarian on projects involving wildlife disease and management in care. May is passionate about continuing research to further our abilities to best care for our wildlife and has presented and volunteered at the Wildlife Disease Association’s annual conferences. She hopes to continue her education in conservation medicine and one day pursue a wildlife residency.
