Derek has extensive training as a veterinarian, wildlife biologist and teacher. He has worked as a zoo and wildlife veterinarian in Australia and internationally and has extensive experience in both in situ and ex situ wildlife conservation programs for over 25 years. His zoo veterinary experience includes 8 years at Taronga Zoo during which he completed a BSc at Macquarie University, majoring in zoology and genetics.
Derek has many wildlife related interests including wildlife diseases in general, the health of captive and free-ranging marine mammals, wildlife rehabilitation, and managing kangaroo populations in urban settings.
Derek also has a strong interest in animal welfare and has been or continues to be a member of several animal research ethics committees
